Reflection
At HTHNC there comes a day in both 9th and 10th grade where students get to shadow someone in the profession that they would like to do when they’re older. Students really get to see if that profession is what they want to do, if its their passion. For my first year of Career day I decided to shadow a veterinarian. I’ve loved animals for as long as I could remember and I’m ok with blood and other things like that so I got attracted to this job. I got the pleasure to shadow Dr. Rei Tanaka. One of my peers and I got the privilege to see Dr. Tanaka and his team spay a beautiful kitten along with check ups, removal of stitches, nail cutting, and checking on an eye cut. We learned that everyday at the Santa Fe Animal clinic is different, but the constant is obviously helping animals in any of their needs. About mid day after surgeries and other check ups with animal the vet assistants get to log in everything that has happened so far about each animal. Spending close to five hours I have found out that the specific clinic that I went to is very relaxed with their rules. When I say relaxed it doesn’t mean that they leave things dirty or don't have any rules whatsoever it's just that they aren't super strict. The dress code is scrub uniforms and technology (phones) are used when nothing is happening and at lunch. The vet team at the Santa Fe Animal Clinic try to do everything they can to help your animal. They have check ups, they spay and neuter, they remove tumors, and other things. I believe High Techs strongest area is helping students getting ready for their life in the real world. We learn many skills needed to be good in the workforce. To become a vet you have to have all of the skills that we use in school. Some examples are oral communication and written communication. Oral communication because you have to be able to talk to both the animals owner and to your team in a relaxed clear way. Also written communication because you have to log everything that happens to the animals down. Something that we forgot to discuss was the degrees that Dr. Tanaka needed to become a vet but thanks to the power of technology one of the degrees that i found that you need is Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) Something that I learned about working in the professional world by shadowing Dr. Tanaka and his team is that there are no shortcuts. You can’t look at something and say i'll worry about it later you have to do that thing there and then. This is definitely a career that I’m interested in pursuing. As I said before I have always loved animals and I don't see myself not enjoying their presence anytime soon and it would be great to help them in any way that I could. In the end they cause so much joy for humans the least thing that I could do to repay them is helping them. I also really love that its very hands on it's not a job that you just sit around all day although there is a portion where you do it's not the majority. Something that I would like to keep in mind for next year is to call/email a little earlier then I did this year. Also, just to do something different next year because I have to see all of my options so I have a variety to choose from. I could also try to do more than one career day next year.

Here we have a kitten that we saw get spayed, the veterinarian and his team that we shadowed, an email that I sent out while trying to find a veterinary clinic to shadow, and my interview questions and answers.
