For this project I chose to re-express an artist named Ouka Leele’s work. She was both a photographer and a painter and she had a creative and unique way to show both of these things in her work. She would take pictures of people with weird and different objects on their heads and then put them in black and white. She would then paint them with water color. I decided to do the same thing with my friends. I chose three of my friends and then chose two things for each of them to put on their heads. One of the things being something to do with their hobbies and then the other thing a random object. In the end I chose one picture for each of them, water colored them, and then put them on a foam board. My recreation piece is all about my friends and how important they are to me. I also wanted to show their hobbies because to me it represents how good they are at what they do and how interesting their hobbies are.
I chose to re-express the creative masters work how I did because its almost identical to how she did her work. All I really changed was the person and the object on the head but the most important thing that I kept the same was the whole style she created. I had someone with an object on their heads and then I chose bright colors to go over the pictures. I did this because I wanted it to be clear who my creative master was and so if you saw my work and her work you could tell pretty easily that it is a recreation.
My re-expression connects to the cultural forces that affected my creative master because in the end it came back to one thing, family. Both Ouka Leele and I were pushed to the arts from our families. When I was quite young I would alway go around taking pictures with my little ipod and with my dads camera. When my parents saw that I loved doing it so much they pushed me toward my passion and told me to keep on doing it. Similar to Ouka Leele’s family, they all already had passions in the arts whether it was poetry or painting. Ouka Leele saw that and she started getting interested and started painting and then went to photography. And that's why to this day I love photography and that's why I found and chose Ouka Leele’s work. In this project I got to strengthen my research skills. Although my masters work is very unique and interesting there wasn't much about her online. I only found a few articles on her and a interview that was all in spanish. So I guess that would be both a challenge and a succes in this project. Another challenge would be understanding her interview that was all about her and her work. It had a lot of information in it that was very interesting but it was all in spanish. So I put english captions on but it didn't make much sense. So I had to really listen to what she was saying and try to understand with a little bit of help from the captions.
Doing this project and finding this artist work has affected me very positively. First reason being it got me a little bit closer to the friends that I took the pictures of. Because of how awkward it is to get your portrait taken with weird stuff on your head and with a straight face it strengthened our bonds. Second reason being, is that it got me excited to work on my videography and photography and finding my own style. Seeing someone succeed in life by doing what they love to do is very inspiring and seeing Ouka Leeles work gave me a jump start to start working hard in my personal work. As I have stated many times what struck me about the masters work is how creative and different it is compared to other artist. It’s fascinating seeing someones creating such unique work and sticking to it.
